What to Do if You Can’t Get Auto Insurance

Although auto insurance is a requirement for all North Carolina drivers, some drivers may find themselves unable to find acceptance for auto insurance.  Other drivers may receive a notice that their currently-held auto insurance is cancelled. According to Paramount, those drivers may  turn to the NCRF (North Carolina Reinsurance Facility) to purchase auto insurance. The reason for this inability to accept an auto insurance application is typically a revoked drivers’ license or an excessive number of reported car accidents.

According to Paramount, agencies who are approached by clients who have similarly elevated insurance risk may “cede” (transfer) that insurance application to NCRF.  The same website states that once an insurance client is accepted by NCRBB, their increased risks will be shared among NCRB’s 450 agency members. All accepted NCRB’s clients will remain part of NCRF for two years. During those two years, the client will work on improving their driving skills, so the next time they apply for auto insurance, they will be approved, at the standard risk level.
